It's a well-known fact that the most efficient kitchens use a triangular work area configuration, with a sink or stove on one side, preparation area to one side, and food storage or a refrigerator on one of the other sides. That's the dream. The reality is that many kitchens just aren't laid-out that well. For many the solution is to renovate their kitchen, which is expensive and, well, you can't cook in it while it's being renovated. That's no fun. An easier and more elegant solution is to create a rolling work surface that can be moved to where it is needed depending on the task. We created a line of custom-designed butcher block overlays for our Industrial Post steel shelving collection that many residential customers and restaurants have found to be an ideal solution to this design challenge.

Our customers will design a solution based on their needs. If you need a bit more counter space near your stove or to create an L-shaped return, a small 14x24 or 18x24 butcher block is an unobtrusive and functional solution. Build a small system with your essentials in the shelves below - sauce packets, bulk seasonings or even bulk baking flour. Many customers will add a wine shelf for their cooking wines. A smart choice is to build the system with 26" posts and use our grey-wheeled casters that won't mark your kitchen floors.

Another situation where customers use our butcher blocks is to create larger work surfaces. Sometimes you just don't have enough counter space, even if your kitchen has a great layout. You can create a full-sized kitchen island workstation using our Industrial Post shelving. Available in lengths up to 48", you can create a large island that will make working on your kitchen easier. The extra storage space below can be configured to meet your specific needs, storing kitchen essentials, bulk ingredients, appliances and more. Depending on your needs, using 30" or 34" posts may be a better choice than using casters if you don't intend to move your island.
